I started racing at 12 years old. By 1997 I had won the Rás Tailteann - Ireland's toughest stage race. I went on to compete in seven Commonwealth Games, carried the Manx flag at the 2010 opening ceremony, and notched over 100 career wins.

After many years as a professional cyclist, I founded Watts Up Performance to pass that knowledge on. Whether you're chasing a national title or your first challenge, I bring the same discipline that took me to the highest level.

Why Coaching Matters

Miles Don't Lie, But They Don't Coach You Either

Most riders don't plateau because they lack effort - they plateau because every session looks the same. Structured, power-based periodisation turns hours on the bike into purposeful adaptation: a threshold builder, a recovery spin, a race simulation - each one with a reason, and someone reviewing the data to make sure it's working.

I've worked with Andy for many years having coaching and bike fits. The journey has been fantastic and seeing results transfer into my professional sporting career is something we can both be proud of. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else than to Andy and wattsup performance

Andrew was my first cycling coach, and I couldn’t have asked for a better person to guide me into the sport. Coming from a triathlon background and transitioning into cycling, I had a lot to learn about the differences between the two disciplines. From the very beginning, he taught me everything I needed to know as a newcomer to cycling, from training and technique to understanding how to approach the sport properly. He was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and always able to explain things in a way that made sense. What I appreciated most was how he helped me build confidence on the bike while developing a much better understanding of my training and performance. His coaching gave me a strong foundation that I’ll carry with me throughout my cycling journey. I’m extremely grateful for the time and guidance Andrew invested in me, and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get into cycling or take their riding to the next level”.

"Andrew's coaching has been instrumental in Tommy's development, both as a cyclist and as a young athlete. His guidance helped Tommy finish the 2026 season as British Cycling's No.1 ranked Youth B rider, with victories in the National Youth Circuit Series, Youth Tour of Kent, European Youth Tour of Assen and Isle of Man Youth Tour. I have worked with Andy as my triathlon coach since January 2020. During this time it has been much more than just straight forward triathlon coaching There has been multiple triathlons (of all distances…super sprint to full Ironman), stand alone swimming, cycling and running events, cycling holidays, inevitable and rather extreme life stresses , injuries and operations. Andy has been there for all of it , supporting, advising, adjusting and getting me to start lines physically and at times possibly more importantly mentally fit. I don’t really know what else to say apart from it’s definitely been an individual approach about me as a person as well as athlete , getting me to achieve goals I would never even have dreamt to be possible at the start of this journey.

Andrew is a fantastic coach who is always looking for those smaller details that can help you improve and maximise your performance as an athlete. I really enjoyed the variety in my training, while still having regular benchmark sessions that allowed us to monitor progress over time. I also really valued his approach to training off the bike, incorporating things like running and gym work alongside cycling. It was an important part of my development and, personally, a really nice way to add variety to training. Andrew is incredibly knowledgeable, attentive and genuinely invested in helping you get the best out of yourself as an athlete.

My Story

Forty Years In The Saddle, Still Chasing The Next Challenge

I started racing bikes back in 1983 - first on a BMX, long before I had any idea it would become a cycling career. That road led to a full racing career, including a number of years riding as a professional. When I hung up my race number in 2014, I didn't step away from the sport - I turned my focus to building something that put everything I'd learned to help other people.

That's what became Watts Up Performance: a single place for coaching, bike fitting, servicing, and bike specification - built around the belief that an athlete shouldn't have to go from one provider to the next just to get properly looked after.

The Journey

From BMX Track To Coaching Business

1982 – 1986

First Pedal Strokes

My racing career began on a BMX. By 1986 I'd climbed to 4th in Canada in the age-group expert class, and 2nd in the Provincial age-group rankings - years before the idea of a road career, or a coaching business, ever entered my head.

1986 – 1989

Turning To The Road

I swapped BMX for the road in 1986. The step up came fast: gold in the Team Time Trial at the 1987 Island Games in Guernsey, then lining up at the 1989 Junior World Championships in Moscow - racing against a young Lance Armstrong.

1990 – 1995

Building An International Career

The next five years took me from the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand (1990), to an overall win at the McKinley Stage Race (1991), a stage win at the FBD Rás and 2nd at the Manx International in 1992 - where I also finished 2nd in the Mountain Time Trial to Graeme Obree, by just 32 seconds. Gold followed at the 1993 Island Games in the Isle of Wight, 13th in the road race at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada, and a season racing for Hot Tubes in America in 1995.

1996 · The Racing Years

Turning Professional

In 1996 I turned professional, racing for Sit & Sit Maestro in Belgium - the start of the pro years that shaped everything I now pass on to the athletes I coach.

1997 – 1999

Career-Defining Wins

1997 brought an overall win at the FBD Rás and gold at the Island Games in Jersey. The following year I became National Time Trial Champion and rode the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, before adding another Island Games gold in Gotland in 1999.

2001 – 2003

International Podiums

Gold at the 2001 Island Games in the Isle of Man was followed by 14th in the time trial at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. In 2003 I took gold at the Guernsey Island Games alongside a young teammate named Mark Cavendish, and won the Mountain Time Trial at the Manx International.

2005 – 2007

UK Professional Career

2005 brought gold in both the road race and MTB at the Shetland Island Games. In 2006 I won the Shay Elliott in Ireland and placed 11th in the time trial at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. 2007 added Island Games gold in Rhodes and a professional contract with Pinarello.

2009 – 2011

Late Career Highlights

Racing as a teammate to Russ Downing where he won the Tour of Ireland in 2009. 2010 took me to the Delhi Commonwealth Games alongside Mark Cavendish, finishing 12th in the time trial, before another Island Games gold in the Isle of Wight in 2011.

2013 – 2014

Stepping Off The Start Line - And Founding Watts Up Performance

Gold at the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda was followed in 2014 by the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow - and by stepping off the professional start line for good to focus on what I call training for life. That same year I founded Watts Up Performance, with one goal: coach athletes from complete beginner right up to pro level.

2015 – 2019

Growing The Coaching Business

2015 was about growth - building my coached client base and qualifying to add bike fitting to what I offer. I went on to serve as team coach at three Island Games: Jersey (2015), Gotland (2017), and Gibraltar (2019), as well as team manager in the Gold Coast Commonwealth games (2018).

2018

Coaching At The Top Level

2018 saw me step up as team coach at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, while also working as coach and assistant to Cal Crutchlow in MotoGP.

New Challenges

Onto The Triathlon Course

Still hooked on being active, I started picking challenge events to try new things - which led me into triathlon, and the multi-faceted approach that swim, bike, and run training demands.

2022

Commonwealth Games, Birmingham

I returned as team coach for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

2023

Ironman Barcelona Finisher

In 2023 I crossed the finish line at Ironman Barcelona myself - proof that the training for life I coach applies just as much to me as to my athletes.

2024

New Shop, Same Mission

2024 marked a new chapter for the business, opening new shop premises for Watts Up Performance.

2025 – Today

Beginner To Pro, All Under One Roof

Every day since has been about the same thing - helping athletes at every stage reach their goals. Watching someone brand new to sport improve is every bit as rewarding as watching a pro athlete win a national title.

"Seeing someone brand new to sport improve is just as rewarding as seeing a pro athlete win a national title."

One Combined Outlook

Coaching, Fitting, Servicing, Specification - One Provider

Rather than sending you from one specialist to the next, I've built a business where coaching, bike fitting, servicing, and bike specification all sit under one roof. If coaching means you also need a bike fit to get you rolling properly, that's already part of the conversation.

  • Coaching, Every Level

Beginner through to pro, using the same experience either way.

  • Bike Fitting

Set up correctly with knowledge and experience.

  • Servicing & Bike Specification

Your bike kept running and specified to match what you're actually training for.

Bike fitting and coaching session

Island Based, Not Island Limited

The Skill You Need Doesn't Have To Be Somewhere Else

Living on a small island, local skill and talent often gets overlooked - with an assumption that better expertise sits somewhere abroad. It simply isn't true. I regularly work with athletes who've spent large sums travelling to a "best in the business" bike fitter, only to come to me afterwards to have it corrected.

Being part of a client's path, in any capacity I can help with, is genuinely rewarding.

Let's Talk About Your Goals

Sidas Certified

Custom Insoles

Most foot, knee and back pain isn’t a shoe problem - it’s a support problem. I create an insole to add additional support to your footwear, which is done in house all for you to take away on the same day.

Why get fitted

Support built for your foot, not the average one.

Injury Prevention

Plantar fasciitis, shin splints, knee pain and lower-back strain are frequently traced back to how the foot loads. Proper arch support and heel alignment take the strain out before it becomes chronic.

Real Performance

A stable, correctly-loaded foot transfers force more efficiently - better power on the pedals, more stable footing on the trail, less energy lost to micro-movement in the shoe.

All-Day Comfort

Hot spots, arch fatigue and tired feet by mid-afternoon are fixable. A footbed matched to your actual arch compounds into hours of comfort.

One Fit, Every Shoe

I can shape an insole for your cycling shoes, your running shoes, football / rugby boots, golf shoes, or your everyday footwear.

The Technology

About Sidas.

Sidas builds custom insoles from an impression of your foot, taken while a specialist heats and shapes the material to your arch, heel, and pressure points as you stand on it - not cut from a pre-made blank.

That heat-moulded shape is then trimmed, finished, and fitted into the shoe or shoes you'll actually wear it in. The result is a footbed built around your foot alone, ready to wear the same day.

  • Weighted foot impression
  • Heat-moulded to your foot
  • Same-day fitting
  • Finished for your shoe

Custom Insoles

Built around your feet, not the other way round.

From a full 3D mould under load to a shoe-matched footbed - every fitting is tailored to how you actually stand, ride, or run.

Before You Arrive

What to bring.

The fitting runs smoothest when we’re working with your actual footwear. Bring what you’d normally wear and we'll handle the rest.

01

Your Shoes

Cycling shoes, running shoes, or boots - whichever pair the insole is going into.

02

Your Usual Socks

Sock thickness changes the fit - bring whatever you actually wear with that shoe.

03

Any Existing Insoles

Off-the-shelf or previous custom insoles help us see what has or hasn't worked before.

04

Any Existing Issues

A note on any foot, knee or back pain, past injuries, or areas of discomfort helps us shape around it.

FAQ

Common questions.

Approximately 45 minutes.
Ideally, yes - I shape the footbed to fit the shoe it's going into. If you're fitting ahead of buying new shoes, let me know and I'll advise on volume and shape.
Most riders and runners get 3+ years from a pair before the foam compresses.

Ready to get supported?

Bring your shoes, your socks, and whatever's been bugging you and I'll handle the rest.

Performance Consult

One Session To Tell You What's Actually Holding You Back

Not every athlete has clarity - some just need an honest, experienced opinion. A Performance Consult is a one-off, decision-focused review of your current bike and training setup. We look at where your training fits around your life and goals, and whether your bike and position are actually right for what you're trying to do - then tell you plainly what's worth changing, and what isn't.

"More riders are held back by the wrong bike or the wrong plan than by a lack of effort. Let's find out which one it is."

What We Look At

Two Sides Of The Same Question

Your bike and your training don't operate separately - they only work if they're both pointed at the same goal. A Performance Consult looks at both sides together.

The Training Side

We look at how your training actually fits around your life, and how well it's aimed at your goals - then talk through what we'd change or improve.

  • › Why your performance may have stopped progressing
  • › Whether your current structure matches your goals and time available
  • › Where fatigue, life, or work are working against your plan
  • › What to change to structure your training going forward

The Bike Side

We look at what you currently have and check it against what you actually need it to do - then talk through what we'd change or improve about the current setup.

  • › Whether you should buy a new bike, or if what you have is suitable
  • › Whether my bike fit is optimal for me
  • › Whether your bike matches its intended purpose
  • › What equipment, if any, is actually worth upgrading

His guidance helped Tommy finish the 2026 season as British Cycling's No.1 ranked Youth B rider, with victories in the National Youth Circuit Series, Youth Tour of Kent, European Youth Tour of Assen and Isle of Man Youth Tour. Beyond the results, Andrew's support helped Tommy overcome setbacks, including two major crashes during the season, both followed by race wins the very next day. We couldn't recommend Watts Up Performance highly enough."

"This is my 5th full season working with Andrew and in this time, I have progressed from minor league races to achieving podium at national level in masters cycling. Andrew provided me with the training structure and encouragement to achieve my goals which I thought were beyond reach. Andrew is generous with his time, very approachable and has a great knowledge of racing and time trialling."

PrePurchase Consult

The Right Bike, Chosen Before You Buy - Not After

There are more bikes, frames, and groupsets on the market right now than any one person can reasonably compare alone. A PrePurchase Consult cuts through that overload - we talk through your riding, your goals, and your budget, and work out exactly what bike and setup actually suits you, before any money changes hands.

Andrew Roche, cycling coach

Who's Behind It

Andrew Roche

40+ years of racing experience, including many years racing as a professional, and 15+ years spent fitting, building, and advising riders of every level on the right bike and setup for what they actually ride.

  • Former professional
  • 7 time Commonwealth games competitor
  • Elite national time trial champion
  • 2 times Commonwealth games coach
  • British Cycling accreditation
  • TrainingPeaks accreditation

"Spec sheets alone don't tell you which bike is right for you. A conversation does."

How It Works

From Conversation To Correctly Sized Bike

Step 1

The Consultation

We talk through how and where you ride, what the bike is actually for, your goals, any planned events, and your budget.

Step 2

The Pre-Fit

Before you commit to a size, I take you through a pre-fit to establish the correct frame size - S, M, L, or wherever you actually fall between them - so you're not guessing off a size chart.

Step 3

The Build

If you buy your bike through Watts Up Performance, the full build is included as part of the service.

Step 4

The Final Fit*

Once the bike is built, I carry out a full bike fitting on the finished setup, so position is dialled in on the actual bike you'll be riding.

*If purchased through Watts Up Performance

General Info

What It Costs

Buying through Watts Up Performance

Free*

The full consultation, pre-fit, build, and final fitting are included at no extra cost when your bike is purchased through Watts Up Performance.

* £85 deposit redeemable against purchase

Buying independently

£85

If you choose to purchase your bike elsewhere, cost of build and final fitting are not included in this price.

  • A full discussion of your riding needs, intended use, goals, and planned events
  • Budget-led recommendations - nothing pushed beyond what you want to spend
  • Guidance on equipment choices - bar width, crank length, gear selection
  • A pre-fit to determine your correct frame size before you buy
  • Full bike build, if purchased through Watts Up Performance
  • Final bike fitting once the build is complete if purchased through Watts Up Performance

Andrew knows this island by feel

After years of training camps in Mallorca, I know these roads like the back of my hand. I read a road before you get to it which corners tighten, which climbs ease off after the ramp, and exactly where to regroup with a coffee waiting.

The Itinerary

Six days of riding, one island

Day 00 Travel day.
Day 01 Reasonable ride to test the legs, but come back reasonably fresh. For the triathlon camp also a nice swim to loosen off.
Day 02 Going big, taking in scenic routes including plenty of climbing with coffee and possible lunch along the way.
Day 03 Slightly more relaxed, 80-100km of riding. Triathlon camp will have an afternoon swim technique session.
Day 04 120-140km of riding, viewing a monastery or two.
Day 05 80-100km or riding. Triathlon camp will have an afternoon swim technique session.
Day 06 Queen stage, hilly long, scenic, and enjoyable.
Day 07 Travel day.

FAQ

Questions before you book.

You should be comfortable riding 3-6 hours with some sustained climbing. Andrew paces each day so the group rides together, and routes can flex shorter if the legs need it.
Most riders hire from our partner Pinerello Experience. This is arranged and part of your pricing structure. Although you can bring your own bike.
Any Garmin, Wahoo, or GPS cycling app that imports standard GPX files. We’ll send them ahead of the trip so you can load them before you fly.

Bike Fitting

Most discomfort on a bike isn’t a fitness problem - it’s a fit problem. We measure how you actually move, then build your position around it.

Why get fitted

You and your bike working in harmony

Injury Prevention

Knee, hip, back and neck pain are almost always positional. Correcting saddle height, reach and cleat alignment removes the load before it becomes an injury.

Real Performance

A cleaner position means better power transfer and a lower, more sustainable aero position - free speed you don’t have to train for.

All-Day Comfort

Numb hands, saddle sores and a sore neck are fixable. Small adjustments compound over a long ride into a completely different experience.

A Bike You Trust

Once your position is dialed in and documented, every future bike - demo, rental, or new build - starts from numbers that already work.

Ideally, yes - we fit you to the bike you actually ride. If you don't have a bike, let me know in advance and I will arrange a suitable bike for the fitting.
Roughly once a year, or any time your body, flexibility, or goals change - after an injury, a big fitness shift, or a new frame or bike category.
You will be sent a summary and a digitised fit file (Zin) covering every measurement - usable for your next bike, a demo, or a bike rental anywhere in the world.
