Great news in from Becky Storrie who has just won the under 23 title in the UK national hill climb championships. Becky also finished equal 3rd overall, with Bithja Jones wining in 2:47.9, 2nd place went to Mary Wilkinson in 2:50.8, with Becky finishing alongside Monica Greenwood in 2:58.8
2nd place under 23 went to Nicole Coates team Torelli in 3:09.7, with 3rd place going to Kate Scott CAMS -Tifosi in 3:10.1
Held near Reading on Streatey hill, the event had an amazing entry of 479 riders with 109 women. Hill climbs are always popular, but this must be the biggest entry the nationals have seen in history.
Working together with Becky, I know she put in a lot of hard work to target this event, and with new Covid restrictions coming in just beforehand, the worry was the event wouldn't go ahead. Luckily that wasn't the case, and all the hard specific work put toward this event was able to be put to the test.
Talking to Becky shortly after, she finished the event completely empty, which when doing one of these brutal events means you've done it right. It's such a fine balance between going slightly too easy or going too hard and fading badly at the end. In Becky's case, she said she got it just right.
What a great end to an otherwise strong racing year, and none better but to finish off as a national champion!
